UCS New Initiatives Fund
Each semester, UCS allocates $4,000 from our New Initiatives Fund to new student initiatives at Brown that may not be able to find funding elsewhere on campus. This fund has been has been successful in supporting the entrepreneurial ethos of Brown while also supplementing the work of the Undergraduate Finance Board to meet the financial needs of student groups at Brown.
Diversity Action Plan Focus Groups
UCS is committed to ensuring that Brown continue to embrace and support its diverse student body, as well as take further action to increase and support the diversity of the faculty. To this end, we have worked hard to include as many student voices as possible in the University’s creation and implementation of Brown’s forthcoming Diversity Action Plan through focus groups, where students have been able to personally critique different drafts of the plan.
Menu Review Team
Campus Life worked with BUDS to establish a Brown Dining Menu Review team. This team is bringing the student perspective to BUDS in order to foster communication that brings about positive change in the dining experience.
Student Resource Sheet
Campus Life has put together a student resource sheet that goes in dorms to let students know the things they can access on campus. This includes contact information, as well as a description of all the resources a center, office, or department has to offer.
Peer Advising Conference
We held the very successful Peer Advising Conference on January 31, 2016. International Mentoring Program (IMP) and First-Gens@Brown presented workshops on international advising and barriers faced by first-gen students, respectively. Representatives from a wide variety of peer advising networks, including Meiklejohn Leadership, Peer Career Advisors, and WiSE Mentors (plus more), participated in the conference. Peer advisors who attended the Conference were able to learn about challenges faced by specific communities on campus and how to better support them in their role as advisors. Those in attendance were also able connect and discuss how their various advising networks could collaborate more in the future.
SA Fee Increase
UCS worked with the Undergraduate Finance Board (UFB) and University Resources Committee (URC) to increase the per-student fee (separate from tuition increases) used by the University to fund all student activities at Brown for the 2016-2017 academic year. This fee increase allows UFB to maintain current levels of funding for student activities and better support student groups.
Revamping UCS Code of Operations
After making some changes to UCS’s internal structure over the summer of 2015, we revamped our Code of Operations to better reflect how the Council operates and to streamline our governing document’s language. You can find all UCS governing documents online here.
UCS has its information available on its website for anyone to see. In increasing transparency between UCS and the student body, through various means, we are making the website more accessible. This includes putting faces to the body through adding pictures of executive board members, reorganizing tabs, adding more graphics, and adding in graphics and colors for a more inviting and aesthetically-pleasing platform.
