The Types of Student Group Categories

Below is information on the different UCS Student Group Categories, their descriptions, privileges, and funding:  


Category I (CAT I)

Assigned to groups newly seeking categorization

Privileges: reserve spaces, submit Morning Mail, access to BearSync, and use of Brown University name

Funding: No base-line funding; access to SAO account available but not eligible for UFB funding

Member requirement: 10 undergraduate students

Category II (CAT II)

Second level of student group status

Privileges: same as previously stated for CAT I 

Funding: $200 per semester in base-line funding; access to SAO account but not eligible for UFB funding

Member requirement: 15 undergraduate students

Category III (CAT III)

Highest categorization status for student group

Privileges: same as previously stated for CAT I and II

Funding: $200 per semester in base-line funding; access to SAO account; may request supplemental UFB funding throughout academic year  

Member requirement: 15 undergraduate students


 

Category S (Service Groups)

Activities primarily take place off campus

Privileges: reserve spaces, submit Morning Mail, access to BearSync, and use of Brown University name

Funding: $200 per semester in base-line funding; access to SAO account; may request supplemental UFB funding throughout academic year

Eligible to apply for funding from Service Group Funding Board if group is not receiving money from national organization

 

 

Umbrella Groups

Umbrella groups are specially designated CAT III student groups with at least three (3) subgroups that are not otherwise formally recognized by UCS or under any other University structure/department.

Umbrella Groups must submit a list of active subgroups and their membership to the UCS Student Activities Committee every year and must notify the committee of any new subgroups

Each subgroup of the umbrella organization must have a minimum of 10 members.

Subgroup privileges and funding are all under the purview and SAO account of the parent Umbrella Group
